Leaf mould is an excellent soil conditioner. It is very simple to make, and highly sought after by gardeners.
Leaf mould will make soil slightly more acid and is an ideal mulch for beds and borders. Leaf mould is very easy to make with the aid of biodegradable jute leaf sacks.
To make leaf mould, collect up your autumn leaves and put them into loosely woven jute leaf sacks.
Ideally collect your leaves after it has been raining, so they are wet as the moisture will help the leaves to break down.
Once the leaf sack is full, simply knot the sack loosely at the top and leave it in a corner of the garden. The leaves and the leaf sack will biodegrade over the course of the next year, and you will be left with beautiful , eco friendly leaf mould that you will be able to use as garden compost.
When you are sweeping up your garden leaves, remember only to compost deciduous leaves. So not try and make leaf mould with evergreen leaves or prunings as they will not break down properly. Instead, add your evergreen leaves to your usual garden compost bin.
